Introduction

The green fig (brevas nazaret) originates from Israel and has a bright green flesh and a striking red centre pulp.

History

Nazaret is a fig cultivar of the San Pedro type Ficus Carica who grow commercially in Israel for export as a fresh fig to the European market and now the UK.

Regions

Currently, the green fig has only been spotted growing commercially in Israel.

Flavours & Texture

Imagine a super sweet fresh brown fig with a less nutty taste. The skin is resistant, elastic, and shiny, apple-green in colour with lenticels.

Preparation

Gently wipe the outer skins with a damp cloth, trim off the stem if it’s hard, then either keep whole or cut in half from top to bottom. You can have it raw or you can slice it and add it to a fruit salad.

Figs are low in calories and are a good source of fibre, iron, and vitamins.
